Reinventing University: the Digital Challenge in Higher Education

Workshop W1

Date: June 18
Time: 13:30 – 18:30
Room: Seminar 4.3 (Building 7J, UPV)

Digital transformation in Higher Education (HE) is a major priority for the European Union (EU). In the years to come, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will be reconstructed at all levels of their operation. By adopting the Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027) on 30 September 2020, the EU targets a high-quality, accessible and inclusive digital education supporting the Member States’ entry into a digital era. Implementing learning and training have been considered key factors to allow modern societies and economies to face the challenges of globalisation and technological progress. Developing digital skills has become essential in this framework to foster lifelong learning and reduce inequalities. By 2030, university students worldwide should reach 414 million, and to meet their needs, Universities must deliver quality and relevant future-proof skills, foster diversity and inclusion, and promote and protect democratic practices, fundamental rights and academic values (EE.UU 2021/C 66/01)

The Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends Report indicates an accelerated need for lifelong learning as graduates lack many skills for today’s work. These changes require HEIs to review organisation, management, evaluation processes, relations systems and competencies framework for teaching and learning and, above all, the meaning of the university’s mission in the digital society, the values towards which to direct, conduct and disseminate research.

This also implies an ethical responsibility regarding the choices and priorities to be pursued for the present and the future of the next generations, considering the disruptive impact of AI technologies on the way teachers and learners acquire knowledge and access information and learning resources.

Based on these premises, the workshop Call is interested in understanding:

  • critical theoretical reflection and/or empirical research focused on the reciprocity relationship between digital, market labour evolution and transformation and HEis;
  • the evolution of HE in its effort to react to and address the triple transition, digital, ecological and demographic.

According to an inter-trans and multi-disciplinary approach, this workshop call will consider contributions within the following thematic areas.

  1. New Role of HEIs in the OnLife paradigm: Governance, teaching and research for a changing society and market labour.
  2. Artificial Intelligence in HEIs. Opportunities for teaching and research, risks and ethical challenges

Theoretical and empirical papers addressing the proposed timings at the meta, macro, meso, or micro levels are welcome.

Goals & Objectives

  • The overarching goal of this workshop is to share research results and best practices focused on the topics mentioned above.
  • The creation of research networking among researchers, experts, universities and research institutes to promote international research collaboration among different institutions of the HE system.
  • The promotion of an open research observatory
